One of the things I love about blogs and similar spaces is that they provide exactly what you are talking about ... a digital collecting space (no matter whether your collection is images, sounds or ideas). John Naisbitt wrote about the "tangibility balance" (nice phrase) in his book Megatrends. You may have read it ... but if not, you can find many snapshots around the web:
